Giving birth in water has been done since the 70’s. Immersion in warm, swirling water is relaxing, easing the pelvic floor and causing the dilation of the cervix to be less painful. Additionally the immersion in warm water increases blood flow to the uterus and this eases any distress for the baby. The baby is delivered into an environment very much like that which it has left, thus easing the transition into the world as it is gently accompanied to the surface. As the baby only begins to breathe when the mouth and nose are exposed to the air, no water is inhaled.
